North Dakota flood operations continues; other states wrap up efforts

The Louisiana National Guard has begun planning for possible flooding in areas along the southeast border of Louisiana and Mississippi near the town of Pearl River, April 2, 2009. The planning focuses on assisting parish officials, protecting property and ensuring the safety of citizens in St. Tammany Parish and surrounding areas.

Soldiers of the 815th Engineer Company carefully install a HESCO barrier near the U.S.-Canadian border. The barrier will reinforce the dike system already in place by adding four feet, which will bring it from 53 feet to 57 feet.

JISCC opens communication for military, civilian agencies in flood fight

Sgt. Chris A. Olson, with the South Dakota National Guard's Joint Force Headquarters, operates the communication handset on the Joint Incident Site Communications Capability (JISCC) system. The system allows Soldiers and Airmen to communicate with emergency responders on the ground fighting the flood.
North Dakota Guardsman Steps Up to Help, Whether it's Iraq, Vegas or Fargo

Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, North Dakota National Guard adjutant general, presents Staff Sgt. Justin J. Lampert with a commander's coin for excellence at the Fargo Armed Forces Reserve Center on April 3. Lampert led a quick reaction force team that responded to the breach at Oak Grove Lutheran School and taught helicopter sling-loading operations to fellow Guardsmen to ensure proper hook-up of 1-ton sandbags. He volunteered to fight the flood and paid his own way back to North Dakota from Fort Benning, Ga., where he was instructing Air Assault School.
North Dakota NCO displays coolness under pressure

"He's just a good NCO," a leader recently said of Sgt. Matt J. Walstad, a member of the North Dakokta Army National Guard's 957th Liaison Monitoring Team out of Bismarck, N.D. His efforts, both by land and sea, have greatly contributed to Guardsmen's safety, as well as the flood-fighting efforts in Fargo, N.D. Respectful hearts keep weary feet marching in Bataan Death March

Team Juggernaut, made up of five Soldiers from Green Bay-based Co., B, 2-127th Infantry crossed the finish line in first place in the National Guard Heavy category of the 2009 Bataan Memorial Death March at White Sands Missile Range in Las Cruces, N.M., on March 29, 2009. The team included: Spc. Andrew Vannieuwehoven, Green Bay; Pfc. Jesse Tlachac, Sturgeon Bay; Sgt. Ryan Gries, Madison; Pfc. Eric Sallenbach, Green Bay; and Pfc. Kyle Cooper, Appleton.
