Alabama Guard officer candidates conquer Talladega on foot

Eldwood Kaumeheiwa (left) from Georgia and Jason Garcia (right)from Alabama head for the finish line at Talladega Super Speedway. Kaumeheiwa and Garcia are among 173 officer candidates at the Alabama Military Academy's Officer Candidate School who completed a 7 mile road march that ended by completing one lap around the Speedway. One lap at the Speedway is approximately 2.6 miles.

MAFFS C-130 drops millionth gallon of fire retardant on California wildfires

Mark Withers with the 153rd Airlift Wing, Wyoming Air National Guard, prepares a modular airborne fire fighting system -equipped C-130 for another fire retardant drop on the California wildfires. The 302nd AEG includes eight U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft operating from McClellan Airfield, Sacramento, Calif., and eight U.S. Marine Corps medium- and heavy-lift helicopters flying from Naval Air Station Lemoore, Calif., providing unique capabilities and is part of a unified military support effort of U.S. Northern Command to provide assistance to California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the National Interagency Fire Center, and U.S. Forest Service operations.

Ohio, Serbia continue cooperation, training

A Soldier of 63rd Parachutist Battalion, Special Forces Brigade fires a 240 B squad operating weapon June 12 on a Camp Grayling, Mich. range. The Soldiers were participating in the National Guard Bureau State Partnership Program (SPP) between Ohio and the Republic of Serbia. The Serbian soldiers will train with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group for two weeks on mission planning, weapons systems and demoing among other tasks and skills. This training is the second half of the State Partnership Plan developed in fall of 2006. In September of 2007, U.S. Special Forces traveled to Serbia to familiarize with Serbian military operations.

Foreign object debris damage prevention is critical to maintaining the jets' engines. One small rock a piece of trash could cause thousands of dollars in damage to an engine.

California Air Guard unit hosts second fire retardant reloading station

Captain Amy Horton, 302nd Airlift Wing maintenace group executive officer, based out of Colorado Springs, Co. rinses the AF Reserve's C-130H of the sticky retardant following a 3,000 gallon drop over the West Basin Fire. Every C-130 equipped with the Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System (MAFFS) in the military's arsenal has been activated to assist in Northern California's firefighting efforts.
