Guard wades into Indiana flooding

Following torrential rainfall from the remnants of Hurricane Ike, the Indiana National Guard was called to help evacuate people from the flooded community of Munster, Ind., Sept. 14. Staff Sgt. Travis Hackett with the 738th Medical Company of Monticello, Ind., assisted by a member of the Munster Fire Department, navigated the dark and slippery stairwells of a flooded nursing home. More than 150 patients were evacuated from the Munster Medical Inn and sent to neighboring hospitals.

Wisconsin Army National Guardsmen Army Spec. Erica Isaacson and Army Spec. Cody Black, who are deployed here to support the detention mission of Joint Task Force Guantanamo, lift and move a piece of roof which was blown off of a sea hut by Hurricane Ike in the JTF's Camp America here, Sept. 9, 2008. Ike struck the island of Cuba the night of Sept. 7, 2008 and caused U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay to participate in a base wide Condition of Readiness 1, closing all facilities and keeping non-essential Troopers in their homes. JTF Guantanamo conducts safe, humane, legal and transparent care and custody of detained enemy combatants, including those convicted by military commission and those ordered released. JTF Guantanamo conducts intelligence collection, analysis and dissemination for the protection of detainees and personnel working in JTF Guantanamo facilities and in support of the Global War on Terror. JTF Guantanamo provides support to the Office of Military Commissions, to law enforcement and to war crimes investigations. JTF Guantanamo conducts planning for and on order responds to Caribbean mass migration operations.

Louisiana Army National Guardsmen from the 2225th Multi-Role Bridge Company in Marrero, La., bring residents of Hackberry, La., to dry land after the small town in the southwest portion of the state received massive flooding caused by Hurricane Ike. Soldiers from the company have been assigned to the area to offer assistance to the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries in search and rescue missions.
