During Operation Mountain Descent II, more than 500 Soldiers and nearly half a million pounds of equipment were airlifted out of the Korengal valley; this was the largest-scale movement of U.S. forces out of the valley. The Delaware unit is part of Task Force Knighthawk, a subordinate battalion of the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade's Task Force Falcon.

Guardsman honors friend through service

Spc. Joseph Carter holds a photo of his best friend, Anthony Owens, who was killed in combat action Feb. 1, 2006, south of Baghdad, Iraq. Carter is deployed with the 1/187 Field Artillery Battalion of the South Carolina National Guard as part of the Paktika Provincial Reconstruction Team. Carter enlisted in the U.S. Army to serve his country and honor the life of his friend, who died while serving his country in Iraq. Carter now carries a photo of his fallen friend in his wallet on every mission.
