The South Dakota Army National Guard presented three officer candidates with the South Dakota Distinguished Service Award Saturday, March 5 at 4:30 p.m. at Fort Meade. Maj. Stephen Sewell (left), presents Officer Candidates Paul Giovanetti, Travis Tipton and Richard Bauman with the award for action they took when traveling home to Pierre from Guard drill last month when they approached a vehicle rollover on Interstate 90.

Soldiers from the Alabama National Guard build and maintain miles of HESCO barriers to protect Dauphin Island, Ala., beaches from the BP oil spill on July 23, 2010, during Operation Deepwater Horizon, which saw more than 1,600 National Guardmembers support civilian authorities in four Gulf states. The American people have come to expect swift and effective responses to natural and manmade disasters, the chief of the National Guard Bureau said Monday.
