Joint exercise enhances capabilities, partnerships

Air Force Lt. Col. June Oldman, director of MEDLITE 11, and Congolese Col. Kabanda, a physician, exchange tokens of gratitude May 5, 2011, as part of the MEDLITE 11 exercise's closing ceremony in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. More than 60 active duty, National Guard and Reserve Airmen worked together to teach aeromedical evacuation techniques to more than 150 Congolese service members from April 25 to May 5.
First-time marathoners take top Guard honors

Air Force Airman 1st Class Emily Shertzer, a member of the 553rd Band of the Mid-Atlantic in the Pennsylvania National Guard, competes in her first marathon at the National Guard/Lincoln Marathon May 1, 2011. Shertzer won the top spot for National Guard females and second place among overall female runners with a time of 2 hours, 54 minutes, 10 seconds.

Arkansas Guard rescues boy scouts stranded by flood waters

Members of a Boy Scout group from Louisiana who were stranded by floodwaters in a remote section of the Ouachita National Forest in southwest Arkansas enjoy the view from an Arkansas National Guard helicopter that rescued them early Tuesday, May 3, 2011. The six Scouts and two adult leaders had been stranded without communications since Sunday.

Missouri National Guard Citizen-Soldiers Spc. Junior Bombard, of Ozark and Sgt. Tim Bridges, both of the 1138th Military Police Company, located in West Plains and Springfield, earned the title Citizen-Heroes after being caught on videotape while completing a daring rescue of a 93-year-old woman on the swollen Black River.
