National Guard helicopters supporting U.S.-Mexico border mission

A National Guard UH-72 Lakota helicopter prepares to fly in support of Customs and Border Protection (CBP)-led Operation Phalanx. National Guardsmen from across the country assist CBP in disrupting transnational criminal organizations and drug trafficking organizations by conducting aerial detection and monitoring along the U.S.-Mexico border in support of Operation Phalanx and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The storm, believed to be one of the most powerful in recent history, managed to shut down all NYC airports, subways and other forms of public transit. The Soldiers were on hand to provide support to first responders in case of a major emergency.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo directed the mobilization of more than 240 National Guard Soldiers and Airmen from area units to assist local authorities with snow removal and traffic control as regions of Western New York saw more than six feet of snowfall in just 72 hours. Similar numbers of personnel are on hand for the current storm.

Cadets also navigated a land navigation course and a 5K road-march as part of the 22-week long program whose goal is to intervene in the lives of 16-18 year old high school dropouts and instill in them the traits and skills they need to become productive citizens.

West Virginia Guard member awarded Soldier's Medal for assisting deputy

Staff Sgt. Shawn Riley, supply sergeant for Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group, was awarded the Soldier's Medal by Maj. Gen. James Hoyer, the adjutant general for the W.Va. Army National Guard on Jan. 11, 2015 at Camp Dawson, W.Va. In August 2011, Riley intervened to help a Preston County Sheriff Deputy Thomas Mitter contain a man who was attacking him with a weed eater in the middle of the road and tried to reach for his pistol. The deputy was running out of options after an exhausting fight, and Riley's actions help save Mitter's life and the attacker.
