With a 'whoosh' and a dunk of airborne bucket, Arizona National Guard trains for wildfire suppression

An Arizona Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter from A Company 2-285th Assault Helicopter Battalion stationed in Phoenix slowly climbs into the air after filling a Bambi Bucket with canal water outside Rittenhouse Army Heliport, Queen Creek, Ariz., Dec. 12, 2014. The Guard members conducted wildland firefighting training using the bucket, capable of carrying nearly 530 gallons of water, to pick up and drop water onto target areas.

Airmen open hearts, homes to future military working dogs

Alaska Air National Guard members rescue snowmobiler

New York National Guard will help safeguard Times Square New Year's celebration

A New York National Guard Soldier and Airman assigned to Joint Task Force Empire Shield keep an eye on the crowd coming and going in New York City's Pennsylvania Station Amtrak terminal on  Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2014. The two are part of the New York National Guard's  500-member State Active Duty force that assists  the Metropolitan Transit Authority Police Department, the Bridge and Port Authority Police Department and the Amtrak Police at New York City's airports and key transit terminals. The uniformed National Guard members do not have arrest authority but provide additional eyes and assist police when requested.

National Guard looks back on a busy 2014

Virginia National Guard Soldiers from the Fredericksburg-based 116th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 116th Brigade Combat Team perform health and welfare checks of abandoned and stranded vehicles during winter storm operations Feb. 13, 2014. More than 200 Va. Guard personnel were staged across the Commonwealth and ready to rapidly respond if needed by Virginia State Police or local emergency response organizations. Across the nation, Soldiers and Airmen responded to assist their local communities.
