National Guard honors Bulgarian war dead

LTG H Steven Blum, the chief of the National Guard Bureau, and Donald Loren, deputy assistant secretary of defense for homeland security integration, pay their respects during a wreath-laying ceremony at the Bulgarian Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Sofia, Bulgaria, on June 2, 2008. Blum and Loren were visiting Sofia for the National Guard State Partnership Program (SPP) Southeast Europe Regional Workshop. The SPP pairs National Guards of U.S. states with foreign countries for military-to-military, military-to-civilian and civil security cooperation.

The airfield at Chhnang Province, Cambodia, is busy with activity as Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, Alaska National Guard and U.S. Air Force members get operations underway for Pacific Angel 2008 here May 24. Operation Pacific Angel is a joint/combined humanitarian assistance operation.
Iowa National Guard supporting tornado relief mission

Iowa National Guard Soldiers patrol the streets of Parkersburg May 28, three days after a tornado ravaged the town, destroying homes and businesses and decimating infrastructure. Among several units called up, approximately 160 Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry are providing security and aiding local officials in recovery efforts. Other Iowa National Guard units are providing communications support, transporting water, creating emergency electrical power and providing operational support.

Soldiers from the Maryland Guard and Baltimore County Fire Department spent the day training and getting familiar with each other's equipment to prepare for a hurricane or major flood in the state.
Air National Guard security forces deploying over 500 to bases in Southwest Asia

Arizona Air National Guard's 162nd Fighter Wing security forces troops load their gear on a KC-135 tanker at Tucson International Airport Feb. 24 on their way to Baghdad International Airport, Iraq, for a six-month deployment. The 19 Airmen, who provide full-time security for the Tucson International Airport, will use their training and expertise to secure Iraq's largest airport. The Airmen are scheduled to return to Tucson in early September. They make up about 1,100 Air National Guard security forces deployed to Southwest Asia in fiscal year 2008.

Soldiers from the Wyoming Army National Guard's 133rd Engineer Company, and a local civilian, prepare sand bags to be stacked along the banks of the Little Snake River in Baggs, Wyo., May 21, 2008, to prevent the town from flooding. The 33 Soldiers work in 12 hour shifts. The unit has been working to save the town since May 19.
