Florida Air Guard member becomes first Guard F-35 instructor pilot

Air National Guard Maj. Jay Spohn performs pre-flight tasks in an F-35A Lightning II joint strike fighter in July during preparations to become the Guard’s first F-35 instructor pilot. He finished his last of six flights Aug. 3, 2012 to become a part of aviation history. Spohn is a Florida National Guard member and is embedded in the 33d Fighter Wing at Eglin Air Force Base where he is responsible for training up the fighter pilots who will fly the fifth-generation F-35 and will carry the U.S. Air Force into the next 50 years of air superiority.

Air Force CSA travel card transitions to GTC

The Air Force Banking Office will start converting approximately 300,000 controlled spend account cards into government travel cards Aug. 7, 2012. For most Airmen, the process will be automatic, and they can continue to use their blue cards. However, those Airmen who are identified as failing to meet creditworthiness requirements will need to make arrangements with their agency program coordinator.

New substance abuse program seeks better outcomes for 'nation's heroes'

Fort Belvoir Community Hospital launched an intensive Substance Abuse Residential Treatment Program in May as part of the last piece to the comprehensive model aimed at reducing relapse rates in active-duty service members. The 20-bed, inpatient section is one of nine departments in Behavioral Health at Belvoir Community Hospital and offers round-the-clock comprehensive care for those in need of the highest level of intervention.

North Carolina National Guard medical officer earns top medical leadership award

Brinson is this year's Army National Guard recipient of the Capt. John R. Teal Leadership Award which annually recognizes MSC officers and non-commissioned officers who have made significant contributions to the medical community and displayed exceptional soldiering skills.

Kansas Army and Air National Guard members assigned to the 73rd Civil Support Team - Weapons of Mass Destruction - take pictures, and use chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) equipment to detect possible hazardous contaminants in the basement of a school during a Vibrant Response 13 field training exercise at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center, Ind, Aug. 6, 2012. The chemical specialists were responsible for documenting and relaying information of contaminated areas to other Joint Task Force Civil Support units during the training venue.
