More than 2,650 Guard members now helping in South Carolina

U.S. Army Spc. Joshua Monk, assigned to the 1052nd Transportation Company, South Carolina National Guard in Kingstree South Carolina, uses a forklift to unload sandbags at the 8 Oaks Park in Georgetown on Oct. 7, 2015. The sandbags were delivered in response to widespread flooding in the area as a result of heavy rain. The South Carolina National Guard partnered with federal, state and local emergency management agencies and first responders to provide assistance.

Nikki Haley declared a state of emergency Oct. 1, 2015, to prepare for projected historic amounts of rainfall to impact the Carolinas after a weather system collided with the outer bands of Hurricane Joaquin off the coast, resulting in significant amounts of rain to fall in the region.
