Brothers serving together help renovate school in Suriname

Brothers Army Spc. Waylon Blasius and Army Spc. Weston Blasius take a break from work at the Pater van der Pluym School in Suriname's Brokopondo district Aug. 1, 2011. Both brothers are carpentry and masonry specialists assigned to the South Dakota Army National Guard's 155th Engineer Company. Soldiers from the 155th are in Suriname as part of New Horizons 2011, a joint humanitarian mission between the Suriname government and the U.S. Southern Command with the goal of helping to improve the quality of life for the people of Suriname. South Dakota and Suriname are paired in the National Guard's State Partnership Program.

Kentucky Guard veteran trains ADT for "sweet" mission

Kentucky Guard members Army Sgt. 1st Class Crystal Dunn, Army Capt. Varinka Barbini and Army Staff Sgt. Catherine Corson, of Agribusiness Development Team 4, hold bottles of honey they processed while training with Jim Cline, a retired chief warrant officer 4 who served more than 30 years in the Kentucky Guard as an aviator. The Guard members are scheduled to deploy next year and teach beekeeping skills as part of the ADT mission to support and impact sustainability and economic development of the Afghan people.

Georgia Guard members mentor state partners in emergency preparedness exercise

Shared Horizons 11 kicked off at the Republic of Georgia National Guard Training Center in Tbilisi. The U.S. Army Europe-led table-top exercise is designed to prepare the RoG government to provide civil response in the event of a natural disaster. Shared Horizons 11 includes about 100 personnel from various RoG ministries and Georgia National Guard members who have worked together under the State Partnership Program for 16 years.
