Army Reserve, National Guard Soldiers survive Sapper Stakes, turn a challenge into friendship

National Guard combat engineers with the 119th Engineer Company (Sapper), from West Virginia, carry a 15-pound shape charge onto a demolition range during Sapper Stakes 2015 competition at Fort Chaffe, Arkansas, Aug. 31, 2015. Combat engineers use demolition in mobility and counter-mobility to both allow movement to allies and impede movement for enemy forces. The competition is designed to build teamwork, enhance combat engineering skills and promote leadership among the units.

New York National Guard member honored for heroism in her own neighborhood

New York Army National Guard Major General Patrick Murphy, the adjutant general of New York, presents the New York State Medal for Valor, the state's highest military award, to Staff Sgt. Marlana Watson, of Lindenhurst, New York, on  Aug. 19, 2015, at the Farmingdale Armed Forces Reserve Center. Watson, a member of the New York Army National Guard's Recruiting and Retention Battalion and a medic, was recognized for rushing across a Syracuse Street on Nov. 5, 2014, to treat two teenagers injured in a drive-by shooting, without regard for her own safety, since the shooter may have still been in the area.
