Army Sgt. Sean Windsor and Army Spc. Joseph Scanlan, of the North Dakota National Guard’s 164th Engineering Battalion of Minot, perform levee patrols in one section of more than 20 miles worth of levees from Minot to Burlington that the Guard is patrolling. Soldiers walk the levees to inspect for any damages that may impact structural integrity, as well as provide a security presence along to river to discourage theft or vandalism.

Leland Lesher, the Army National Guard force protection branch noncommissioned officer in charge and an Illinois Guard member, swears the oath of extension and enlistment during a small ceremony at the Army National Guard Readiness Center in Arlington, Va., June 7, 2011. Lesher first enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1970 and switched to the Guard after returning home from Vietnam. Lesher is one of the last active-duty Guard members who has service time in Vietnam.
