New York Air Guard supports NASA's final shuttle mission

The shuttle Atlantis takes off from Launch Pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center, Fla., on the STS-135 mission, July 8, 2011. This is the final flight of the Space Shuttle Program, during which the STS-135 crew will deliver the Raffaello multipurpose logistics module containing supplies and spare parts for the International Space Station. Members of the New York Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing were on hand at Patrick Air Force Base, Fla. to provide rescue support if Atlantis astronauts had been forced to abort the mission and bail out of the spacecraft.

Gerard Coleman, a team member of the Denali expedition, teaches Air Force Tech. Sgt. Jeremy Madama and Air Force Staff Sgt. Bill Cenna, a pararescuemen with the Alaska Air National Guard's 212th Rescue Squadron, and the rest of the team how to use medical equipment to be used on the climb up Mount McKinley. Three members of the squadron supported a three-week, grassroots wounded-warrior project to take combat-injured veterans up the mountain starting June 24, 2011.

Georgia Guard members mentor state partners in emergency preparedness exercise

Shared Horizons 11 kicked off at the Republic of Georgia National Guard Training Center in Tbilisi. The U.S. Army Europe-led table-top exercise is designed to prepare the RoG government to provide civil response in the event of a natural disaster. Shared Horizons 11 includes about 100 personnel from various RoG ministries and Georgia National Guard members who have worked together under the State Partnership Program for 16 years.
