From surf to snow: Hawaii Guard members learn cold weather survival tactics

Army National Guard Lt. Col. Joe Laurel, commander of the Hawaii National Guard's 93rd Civil Support Team, digs out snow to form a snow shelter as part of joint-forces training with the Colorado National Guard's 8th Civil Support Team and 5th Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group, in Snowmass Village, Colo., Jan. 25, 2012. The Hawaii Guardsmen are in Colorado in support of CONG operations at the Winter X Games. All Guardsmen were instructed to wear civilian clothes for the duration of their training to reduce military visibility to mitigate civilian concern.

Air Guard crew plays vital role in South Pole evacuation

Air Force Maj. Josh Neilson (left) and Tech Sgt. Randy Powell played a major role in the evacuation of several fishermen badly injured off the Antarctic coast on Jan. 11, 2012. On Jan. 13, the two men were part of a New York Air National Guard air crew that flew the injured from McMurdo Station, Ross Island to Christchurch, New Zealand - a trip that covered about 2,300 miles.

North Dakota National Guard Biathletes Win Regional Competition

Air Force Capt. Eric Nordgren, who serves with the North Dakota Air National Guard, leaves the starting gate during the Central Region Biathlon Competition at Mt. Nordgren won the 12.5-kilometer pursuit race and placed second in the 10-kilometer sprint race, helping to lead the North Dakota National Guard Biathlon Team to its third regional win in three years.

Dr. Herman "Dutch" Leonard, professor, Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School, speaks to a class during the Homeland Protection Course at MIT Lincoln Laboratory on Jan. 26, 2012. Fifty professionals from across the country and all branches of service from the rank of lieutenant colonel to brigadier general and DoD civilians attended a five-day course designed to provide a broad understanding of homeland protection missions, enabling technologies, architectures and current challenges. The course consisted of technical lectures, tours and hands-on exercises. Each lecture, tour and exercise was given by a leading expert at MIT Lincoln Laboratory.
