Soldiers from the Massachusetts National Guard 8th Infantry disembark from a train stopped in Columbus, N.M., on or about July 1, 1916. The Massachusetts Guardsmen were among the first National Guard units to arrive in Columbus after their 2,000-mile journey from Boston, after President Wilson federalized the entire force on June 18, 1916, the first use of the National Defense Act signed into law 15 days earlier.
