Arizona National Guard joins with other units to protect Super Bowl crowds

New York begins drawing down blizzard Airmen and Soldiers

Soldiers with Joint Task Force Empire Shield work with members of the FDNY during a major blizzard Jan 26, 2015. The storm, believed to be one of the most powerful in recent history, managed to shut down all NYC airports, subways and other forms of public transit. The Soldiers were on hand to provide support to first responders in case of a major emergency.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo directed the mobilization of more than 240 National Guard Soldiers and Airmen from area units to assist local authorities with snow removal and traffic control as regions of Western New York saw more than six feet of snowfall in just 72 hours. Similar numbers of personnel are on hand for the current storm.

Staff Sgt. Shawn Riley, supply sergeant for Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group, was awarded the Soldier's Medal by Maj. Gen. James Hoyer, the adjutant general for the W.Va. Army National Guard on Jan. 11, 2015 at Camp Dawson, W.Va. In August 2011, Riley intervened to help a Preston County Sheriff Deputy Thomas Mitter contain a man who was attacking him with a weed eater in the middle of the road and tried to reach for his pistol. The deputy was running out of options after an exhausting fight, and Riley's actions help save Mitter's life and the attacker.
