West Virginia Guard member awarded Soldier's Medal for assisting deputy

Staff Sgt. Shawn Riley, supply sergeant for Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group, was awarded the Soldier's Medal by Maj. Gen. James Hoyer, the adjutant general for the W.Va. Army National Guard on Jan. 11, 2015 at Camp Dawson, W.Va. In August 2011, Riley intervened to help a Preston County Sheriff Deputy Thomas Mitter contain a man who was attacking him with a weed eater in the middle of the road and tried to reach for his pistol. The deputy was running out of options after an exhausting fight, and Riley's actions help save Mitter's life and the attacker.
