The On Guard newspaper was published monthly by the Command Information Branch of the National Guard Bureaus Public Affairs Office for all members of the Army and Air National Guard. Its production run started in the late 1970s and ended with the September 2008 issue. It was mailed to Guard installations, DoD facilities and key people throughout the continental United States, including the Virgin Islands, Europe, Hawaii and Alaska. Though the number of copies printed varied over its 30-year lifespan, at its high 70,000 copies were printed and mailed to an address list of over 3,000. The On Guard covered the National Guard as a whole, with a special emphasis on the NGB chief's priorities and events and news in the National Capitol Region. The newspaper used content produced by a staff at NGB along with photos and stories from the field.
