New York National Guard's Rainbow Division helped end WWI

National Guard Soldiers of the 165th Infantry (formerly the 69th Regiment, New York National Guard) prepare to move forward with weapons at the ready during an attack at Landres-et-St. Georges in October 1918. The 165th Infantry fought as part of the 42nd “Rainbow” Division during St. Mihiel in September and Meuse-Argonne in October, part of the American Expeditionary Force 100 days offensive that brought an end to World War I.

N.Y. Guard Soldiers 'broke' Hindenburg Line 100 years ago

Soldiers of the New York National Guard's 107th Infantry Regiment, a part of the 27th Division, train with a British machine-gun armed tank during training for the assault on the Hindenburg Line during September 1918. When the attack kicked off, the 107th lost 1,000 men wounded and killed out of a strength of 1,662. The tanks that supported the attack on Sept. 29, 1918, were quickly knocked out.
