An F-15 from the 142nd Fighter Wing of the Oregon Air National Guard prepares for a flight at Portland Air National Guard Base. Two aircraft from the unit were scrambled on Jan. 6, 2009 to escort a Hawaiian Airlines flight back to Portland International Airport.

Alaska Guardsmen save 48 lives in 2009

Pararescuemen Staff Sgt. Jeremy Madama, on ground, and Master Sgt. Johhny Davis deploy from a 210th Rescue Squadron HH-60 Pave Hawk via fast rope. Both are members of the Alaska National Guard, which saved 48 lives in Alaska in 2009 and assisted 12 others to safety during another busy year.
