Bittersweet homecoming for Citizen-Soldier helping Joplin

When Gov. Jay Nixon ordered the Missouri National Guard to provide state oversight for the debris removal the process, Missouri National Guardsman, Army Col. William A. Ward, was appointed commander of the task force. Ward was born in St. John’s Hospital, which was hit hard by the tornado and is less than a mile from the armory where his task force is based.

National Guard ever present for Midwest flood relief

Soldiers of the North Dakota National Guard's 816th Engineer Company (Horizontal) responded to a call June 14, 2011, to perform a sandbagging mission raising the levee near Burlington, N.D. Because of the heavy amounts of rain the state received, the 816th was tasked to raise several low spots on levees throughout their area.

Missouri National Guard helps monitor sand boils in northwest Missouri

Army Staff Sgt. Brian Garr, a Task Force 110 liaison officer for Andrew Co., records a description and the location of sand boils found near a levee south of Amazonia, Mo., on June 14, 2011. Sand boils occur when water under pressure pushes up through the ground and appears to “boil" up. Sand boils can be a mechanism contributing to a levee failure during floods. These sand boils were determined to not be harmful to the levee at this time. Task Force 110 will continue to monitor these sand boils, along with other key sites as preparations for potential flooding continue in Andrew Co.

Each bucket can hold 780 gallons of water and be carried under the Army helicopters. The aviators were helping the Florida Division of Forestry and firefighters by dropping water on spreading wildfires sparked by lightning.
