Illinois Guard Soldiers Receive Polish Armed Forces Medal

Weaver was one of four Illinois National Guard Soldiers awarded the bronze Polish Armed Forces Medal on March 25, 2023, for their work training Polish Territorial Defense Force Soldiers in Poland in May and June 2022.

Virginia National Guard Installation Redesignated Fort Barfoot

The Virginia National Guard’s Fort Pickett was officially redesignated Fort Barfoot in honor of Col. Van T. Barfoot, a World War II Medal of Honor recipient with extensive Virginia ties, during a ceremony March 24, 2023, at the Blackstone Army Airfield near Blackstone, Virginia. Barfoot’s daughter, Margaret Nicholls; Sen. Tim Kaine; Lt. Gen. Jon Jensen, director of the Army National Guard, and Maj. Gen. Timothy P. Williams, the adjutant general of Virginia, spoke at the ceremony and unveiled the sign that will mark the front entrance of the installation.

Idaho Guard’s First Female Senior Enlisted Leader Paves Way

The crucifix was the property of poet Joyce Kilmer, who died while serving in the 69th Infantry in World War I.
