Tennessee National Guard begins tornado response

42nd ID Soldier is first Guard member chosen for DARPA fellowship

New York Army National Guard Capt. Steven Quinones, from Tappan, N.Y., was the first National Guard member chosen for a fellowship with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency in Arlington, Va., from September to December 2019. Quinones, a signal officer assigned to the 42nd Infantry Division, worked alongside service members from across the military as well as Department of Defense civilians to develop new technologies.

So how do the participants of Exercise Arctic Eagle get around in the frigid, snowy conditions of the Arctic? One method is the Small Unit Support Vehicle, a full tracked, articulated vehicle designed to support infantry platoons and similar sized units during operations in Arctic and alpine conditions. The four individually driven tracks of the SUSV allow it to travel over deep and soft snow.

The 152nd Airlift Wing, Nevada Air National Guard, became the newest unit to develop an AFWERX spark cell with the creation of "Silver State Spark" in February 2020. About 70 spark cells launched around the world since the U.S. Air Force debuted AFWERX in 2017, mostly active-duty.
