Massachusetts Guardsman remembered for selfless service

Army Spc. Dennis C. Poulin of Pawtucket, R.I., was a gunner with the Massachusetts National Guard's Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 181st Division assigned to the Kunar Provincial Reconstruction Team. Poulin died March 31, 2011, as a result of injuries suffered from a vehicle accident while conducting a mounted combat patrol near Chowkay, Afghanistan.

The Soldiers are members of a North Dakota National Guard quick response force team that has been sent to the rural home, which has been surrounded by miles of floodwater, by the Cass County tactical operations center. A joint government agency team is evacuating Tenold from his home, at his request, as floodwater surrounds his residence, making it impossible for him to get out on his own. The team is an example of how agencies are working together to help others during the 2011 Red River Valley flood. As of Saturday April 9, about 480 N.D. Air and Army Guardsmen were conducting flood operations.

Army Pvt. Albert D.J. Cashier enlisted in the Illinois militia August 3, 1862 at age 19. After being hit by a car in 1911 a doctor discovered he was a woman by the name of Jennie Hodgers. As a Soldier, Cashier frequently went above the call of duty serving in the 95th Illinois Regiment, a unit that saw much combat, including the battle at Vicksburg.

West Virginia Guard member looks back at Desert Storm

Sgt. 1st Class John Oliverio, a senior human resource non-commissioned officer, assigned to 1/201st Field Artillery, West Virginia Army Guard, wears his Desert Storm combat patch proudly. Oliverio was assigned to the 201st but attached to the 18th Airborne Corps and fondly remembers the welcome home celebration his unit received upon their return. Oliverio resides in Fairmont, W.Va., with his wife Barbara and together they share six children and six grandchildren.
