In the aftermath: National Guard a beacon of hope in Joplin

Pvt. First Class Jesus Ramos, 1139th Military Police Co., Missouri Army National Guard, directs traffic at a storm-damaged intersection near St. John’s Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Mo., on May 24, 2011. Ramos is part of a Guard contingent mobilized to assist local law enforcement with traffic control and other duties in the wake of the devastating tornado. Ramos said he just completed two weeks of state emergency flood duty in Mississippi County before being transferred here to assist with rescue and recovery efforts.

Air National Guard, fuels up an U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, F-16C Fighting Falcon aircraft with an alternative bio-fuel blend made up of 50 percent camelina-based bio-fuel and 50 percent regular Jet Propellant 8 (JP-8) fuel, while Air Force Staff Sgt. Luke Miller, Thunderbird aircraft maintainer, watches. More than 3,000 gallons of bio-fuel was mixed with 3,000 gallons of JP-8 for use by the Thunderbirds for the 2011 Joint Service Open House.
