Guard family gets Extreme dream home

"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" host Ty Pennington joins the family of Virginia National Guardsman Spc. Michael Lucas in cheering "Move that bus!," allowing the family their first glimpse of their totally-renovated home in Rice, Va., Dec. 10. Lucas is currently deployed to Iraq with Company C, 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry, Virginia Army National Guard.

Washington National Guard goes door-to-door, shore-to-shore in December storms

Nearly 500 Washington State Army and Air National Guardmembers were activated in early December and worked to restore power and ensure safe travel around flooded roads, among other duties. The Guard mobilized with about 75 vehicles that could get through many of the flooded areas that regular vehicles could not.

Operation Deep Freeze main season underway

Air National Guard aircrew members utilize a jet-assisted takeoff to depart Shackleton Glacier, located in the Transantarctic Mountains 500 miles south of McMurdo Station, Antarctica, Nov 26. The aircrew conducted an open field landing to deliver a small National Science Foundation geology field camp team to the area. Assigned to the 109th Airlift Wing, Scotia, N.Y., the aircrews are flying the Antarctica missions in support of Operation Deep Freeze.

Five Guard brigades alerted for 2009 deployments

US Army (USA) 2nd Battalion (BN)/198th Armor (2nd/198th), Quick Response Force (QRF), Mississippi Army National Guard (MSARNG), Amory, Mississippi (MS), facilitated a live fire weapons training exercise for the Iraqi National Guard (ING) at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Duke.  ING personal attending received training on weapons safety, maintenance and proper handling. Then briefed on firing techniques and given the opportunity to sharpen their marksmanship skills by following a sequence of fire with their Tabuk 7.62 mm assault rifles.  The US Army is helping establish Iraq's defensive forces as part of the rebuilding process of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. The 2nd/198th are deployed to FOB Hotel and are part of the 155th Brigade Combat Team (BCT), Tupelo, MS.

Oregon National Guard rescues hundreds, provides ongoing support

The coastal town of Vernonia, Ore., was hard hit by heavy rains Dec. 2 and 3.  Oregon Governor Theodore Kulongoski reviewed the damage from an Oregon Army National Guard UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter on Dec. 4.
