Virginia Guard, Tajikistan Police Train on Marksmanship

Three Virginia National Guard Soldiers participate in a marksmanship exchange with female members of the Tajik National Police Sept. 5-9, 2023, in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The Virginia Guard and Tajikistan have been partners for 20 years under the Department of Defense National Guard Bureau State Partnership Program.

Virginia Guardsmen Compete in Finnish Sniper Championship

Three Virginia National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, competed in HÄYHÄ 2023, a Finnish Sniper Championship, Aug. 25-27, 2023, near Taipalsaari, Finland. Staff Sgt. Matthew Dawson, Staff Sgt. Joshua Johnson and Sgt. Gavin Asbury made up one of 26 teams in the competition.

The exchange supported the Department of Defense National Guard Bureau State Partnership Program, in which Virginia and Tajikistan have been partners since 2003.

Virginia and Tajikistan are partners in the State Partnership Program.

Members of the U.S.-Romania team take part in Exercise Locked Shields 2023 at the Morgantown Readiness Center in Morgantown, W.Va. The West Virginia National Guard, under the leadership of the Defense Information Security Agency, hosted more than 180 technical cyber experts and supporting representatives from federal and state agencies to compete on behalf of the U.S.-Romania team in the world’s largest international cyber defense exercise run virtually by the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence in Tallinn, Estonia.

Virginia National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 183rd Cavalry Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, build extreme cold weather skills in advance of Exercise Arctic Forge 23 Feb. 19-20, 2023, in Sydonkyla, Finland. Exercise Arctic Forge 23 is a U.S. Army Europe and Africa led umbrella exercise that leverages the host-nation exercises Defense Exercise North in Finland, and exercise Joint Viking in Norway, focused on building capabilities and cooperation in support of the U.S. Army's Arctic Strategy.

Virginia Guard Provides Maintenance Support in Germany

Virginia National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 3647th Maintenance Company, 529th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 329th Regional Support Group, support the Joint Multinational Readiness Center during an exercise March 4-18, 2023, at Hohenfels Training Area in Hohenfels, Germany. During the rotation, 50 Soldiers with the 3647th performed service and maintenance supporting the JMRC maintenance facility and 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, which provides opposing forces to units training at JMRC.

Virginia National Guard Installation Redesignated Fort Barfoot

The Virginia National Guard’s Fort Pickett was officially redesignated Fort Barfoot in honor of Col. Van T. Barfoot, a World War II Medal of Honor recipient with extensive Virginia ties, during a ceremony March 24, 2023, at the Blackstone Army Airfield near Blackstone, Virginia. Barfoot’s daughter, Margaret Nicholls; Sen. Tim Kaine; Lt. Gen. Jon Jensen, director of the Army National Guard, and Maj. Gen. Timothy P. Williams, the adjutant general of Virginia, spoke at the ceremony and unveiled the sign that will mark the front entrance of the installation.

Virginia National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 576th Engineer Utilities Detachment, 276th Engineer Battalion, 329th Regional Support Group, return to Virginia Feb. 10, 2023, after serving on federal active duty in Southwest Asia since May. The Soldiers  supported U.S. Central Command’s Operation Spartan Shield.
