Michigan Guard, Sierra Leone Establish State Partnership

The Michigan National Guard and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces come together to mark the beginning of their partnership under the State Partnership Program in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Sept. 12, 2024. This SPP signing ceremony represents a new chapter of mutual support, training, and cooperation.

Instructors from the Michigan National Guard’s 177th Regional Training Institute teamed with instructors from the Armed Forces of Liberia Feb. 19 to March 3, 2024, to assess an instructor “dry-run” at Camp Ware, Liberia. The West African nation, partnered with the Michigan National Guard under the State Partnership Program since 2009, is standing up its own Noncommissioned Officer Academy.

The State Partnership Program was established in 1993 to assist countries emerging from behind the Iron Curtain. It now includes 88 partnerships with 100 nations and the National Guard of every state, territory and the District of Columbia.
