Louisiana National Guard's barriers protect coastline

By Army Col. Mike Deville, Louisiana National Guard

BATON ROUGE, La., - Coastal barriers constructed by the Louisiana National Guard are providing protection not only against oil intrusion, but also against a new threat: the effects of Tropical Storm Alex.

Guardsmen have emplaced land bridges, sandbags, Tiger Dams and Hesco barriers to close gaps and protect the low-lying sections along the coast.

All of these efforts are designed to help prevent oil from seeping into inland areas. These projects will also help to reinforce Louisiana's coastline against the possible effects of Alex.
