Guam National Guard Respond to Cabras Island Explosion - Exercise Only

By Press Release

Release No. 2007-10-17.1.

Members of the Guam National Guard, Guam's first military responders, were called upon by Gov. Felix P. Camacho to assist the local first responders at the Cabras Power Plant yesterday after an explosion occurred.

The 94th CST-WMD provided technical support to the first responders at the blast site. The Guard members working with the Guam Fire Department's Hazardous Material Response Team and the Navy's Explosive Ordinance personnel conducted a joint initial survey of the blast area using survey meters and dosimeters to determine the level of radiation on the blast site.

In addition, the 93rd CST-WMD arrived from Hawaii yesterday. They received their mission brief and had successfully conducted a Relief in Place to allow the 94th personnel a recuperation period. The 93rd CST, along with the Guam Fire Department's Hazardous Material Response Team and FBI, has extracted one body from the blast site.

Guam National Guard's Quick Reaction Force has deployed 40 Guard members to assist the Guam Police Department to maintain and provide security at the blast site and Guam Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport.

The people of Guam should be steadfast and resilient in the face of this threat and rely on those values we hold dear to protect our way of life. We should act responsibly and help our fellow citizens.
