Soldiers from C Company, 1st Battalion, 171st Aviation Regiment, land in a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter during a training flight on Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan. Soldiers from the unit recently transported a critically wounded Marine who had live rocket propelled grenade round embedded in his leg. Without the quick thinking of the air crew, the Marine would not have survived.

Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, awards Army Sgt. 1st Class Ryan Ahern, with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne), the Silver Star at the Pritzker Military Library in Chicago, May 19, 2012. Ahern was awarded the Silver Star for saving the lives of his injured teammates in Afghanistan in 2009. He thanked members of his unit and his family for the sacrifices they made during his deployment. Also pictured is Army Capt.
