A National Guardsman competes in the USCC National Guard Cross-Country Snowmobile Championship. The team, which was comprised of one North Dakota Guardsmen and two from Minnesota, placed third in the event.

Mike Mullen, the chairman on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the 2010 National Guard Family Program Volunteer Workshop in New Orleans, La., on Aug. 2, 2010. He also noted the transformation of the National Guard since Sept. 11, 2001: "There's no institution where things have changed more dramatically than in the Guard."

Air National Guard fighter wing preps for alert missions at Tyndall

An F-16 from the 179th Fighter Squadron, a subordinate unit of the 148th Fighter Wing out of Duluth, Minn., flies a mission over the Gulf of Mexico on Jan. 27, 2011. The 148th FW is working with the 53rd Weapons Evaluation Group at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., for two weeks to train for their Air Sovereignty Alert missions and to validate their new Block 50 F-16s.

Philip Olivier, a 159th Operations Group intelligence analyst, was the first-ever Louisiana Air National Guardsman to attend the Army’s Advanced Leader Course at Camp Cook in Ball, La., Jan. 8 to 20, 2011. ALC teaches Soldiers the values, attributes, actions and the technical and tactical skills needed to lead squad and platoon-level operations. For the Air Guard, it provides a unique opportunity to understand and appreciate “Army speak” while training in a joint environment.
