Sgt. Eric Hintermeyer of the Nevada National Guard's Counterdrug Task Force launches a Raven unmanned aerial vehicle during the 2008 Vigilant Guard exercise on June 13 in Fallon, Nev. During the exercise, the small aircraft displayed to emergency responders its ability to assist incident commanders with reconnaissance and intelligence capabilities during domestic contingencies.

An employee from the Cedar Rapids Water Utility prepares to attach a lift cable from an Iowa Army National Guard CH-47 Chinook to a damaged water pump on the Iowa River near Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The CH-47 from Bravo Company, 2-11 General Aviation Support Battalion was used recover several water pumps in need of repair following massive flooding caused by heavy rains in Iowa. The pumps will be repaired and put back in place to provide fresh water for the residents of Cedar Rapids.

Wisconsin National Guard provides real-time video of flood damaged areas

Mission system operation Lt. Col. Tim Howell of the 186th Air Refueling Wing, Meridian, Miss., operates a console aboard an RC-26. Working with several state agencies along with the Wisconsin Air National Guard, the Mississippi Air National Guard RC-26 demonstrated the benefits of this new capability during an initial flood assessment mission in southern Wisconsin on June 10. The crew flew above the flood stricken region transmitting real-time imagery to the Wisconsin Joint Operations Center and the Wisconsin Emergency Operations Center.
