Alaska Air Guard rescuers save three after plane crash

An HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter from the Alaska Air National Guard 210th Rescue Squadron performs deck landing qualifications aboard the forward-deployed guided-missile cruiser USS Shiloh during preparations for Hong Kong Search and Rescue Exercise 2008. Rescuers used a similar craft to save three plane crash victims.

Soldiers from the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Regiment "Old Guard" unfurl and raise a hand-stitched replica of the 15-star, 15-stripe flag to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the defense of Fort McHenry, Sept. 14, 1814. The ascent of the stars and stripes would inspire 1st Lt. Francis Scott Key of the District of Columbia Militia to pen the immortal words that would become the national anthem. The flag was raised at exactly the same day and time as it was 200 years ago during the War of 1812.

Members of the Maryland National Guard’s 175th Infantry Regiment, Maryland Defense Force, and service members from other units and branches march in the footsteps of those who defended Baltimore 200 years ago. During the March of the Defenders, in celebration of the bicentennial of the 'Star Spangled Banner,' more than 400 Service members marched six miles from Patterson Park to North Point on Sept. 11, 2014. In the war of 1812, the Maryland Militia marched to slow the British advance, while the city of Baltimore prepared its defenses.

It's at Camp Ripley, Minnesota, where the National Guard is partnering with Minnesota Power to build a huge solar array to help save energy.

Maj. Gen. James K. "Red" Brown, commander of the 36th Infantry Division, and Col. Rick Adams place the Valorous Unit Award on the "colors" of the 1-149th Attack-Reconnaissance Battalion during a ceremony held Feb. 8, 2014, at Ellington Field. The unit was awarded this high honor for exceptional performance during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The 1-149th is an AH-64 "Apache" battalion assigned to the 36th Combat Aviation Brigade and earned the award for their 2006-2007 deployment to Iraq.

Pvt. Alecia Calloway is one of the newest members of the Florida Army National Guard. On Aug. 27, 2014, Calloway - a widow of an Army Soldier - took the Oath of Enlistment at the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) in Jacksonville, joining the Florida Army National Guard’s 2153rd Finance Detachment.

Virginia Guard engineers work with local officials, demolish abandoned structures while honing engineering expertise

A Soldier from Virginia Army National Guard’s 180th Engineer Company uses an excavator to demolish an abandoned structure in Petersburg, Virginia as part of Operation Renew. Operation Renew provides Virginia National Guard engineer assets to assist local authorities in reclaiming control of known drug trafficking areas by destroying abandoned structures known to have ties to the local drug trade. The program operates under the supervision of the Virginia Guard Counterdrug Task Force and in conjunction with local law enforcement.

Lt. Col. Morris "Moose" Fontenot Jr. was part of the 104th Fighter Wing based in Westfield, Massachusetts. He was killed Aug. 27, 2014, when his F-15C Eagle crashed in mountainous Virginia terrain. He had been flying from Massachusetts to New Orleans for a scheduled system upgrade when it went down near Deerfield, Virginia.
