An Alaska Air National Guard HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter from the 210th Rescue Squadron flies on a training flight July 10 in south-central Alaska. The hoist capabilities of the Pave Hawk helicopters provide the rescue assets with the ability to conduct rescue missions in rugged terrain.

Master Sgt. Roger Sparks, and Maj. Joseph Conroy, both with the 212th Rescue Squadron, Alaska Air National Guard, hold an award citation during a ceremony on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, July 11. Sparks was awarded the Silver Star, the nation’s third-highest award for valor, for his role in a firefight with insurgents during Operation Bulldog Bite in Afghanistan’s Watapur Valley on Nov. 14, 2010. His actions during the combat operation resulted in four American lives being saved and four casualties being returned to their families with honor and dignity.

Airmen, aircraft continue Greenland mission

An LC-130 "Skibird" with the 109th Airlift Wing from Stratton Air National Guard Base, Scotia, N.Y., returns to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, on June 29, 2014, from a mission at Summit Camp. Two LC-130s and 70 Airmen from the Wing recently completed the fourth rotation of the 2014 Greenland season. The unit flies supply and refueling missions to various camps in support of the National Science Foundation and also trains for the Operation Deep Freeze mission in Antarctica.
