New York Soldiers use backyard dry firing, private ranges to prep for National Guard shooting match

U.S. Army Spc. Tyler Studd, Staff Sgt. Raphael Ramos, Staff Sgt. Michael Kapela and 1st Lt. Christopher Tornabene, Soldiers with the 152nd Engineer Support Company, New York Army National Guard, will represent the New York National Guard at the annual Winston P. Wilson marksmanship competition at the Robinson Manuever Training Center at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, July 23-27.

Last year’s California wildfire response saw one of the first uses of the Domestic Operations Awareness and Assessment Tool, or DAART, a web-based program that pulls together geospatial information from a variety of sources including terrain and mapping data, video feeds from overhead aircraft and satellite imagery.

Tom Burden, a weapons mechanic with the Ohio Air National Guard’s 180th Fighter Wing, stands with the tool mat he invented using his civilian background in mechanical engineering. While working on one of his unit’s F-16 Fighting Falcons, Burden almost fell while trying to retreive a tool that had slid down the aircraft’s curved surfaces. Burden’s mat allows mechanics to safely keep needed tools handy, even on curved surfaces.
