Louisiana National Guard better, stronger 10 years after Katrina

Soldiers and Airmen from the Louisiana National Guard work at a distribution point in the Bywater area of New Orleans to distribute food, water and ice to citizens in need of resources after Hurricane Isaac, Sep. 1, 2012. The LANG had more than 6,000 Soldiers and Airmen on duty to support people, local and state authorities by conducting Hurricane Isaac operations.

Illinois National Guard conducts major earthquake drill with local and international partners

Members of the Illinois National Guard team up with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency in a simulated response to a major earthquake in the central U.S. The week-long exercise took place at the 183d Fighter Wing in Springfield, Illinois, and concluded on Aug. 28, 2015. More than 220 military members and over 100 civilian emergency management personnel from multiple agencies participated in the exercise known as Prairie Assurance. Taking a break from sorting through the damage left by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Stacey Besselman stands on the front porch of her Jackson Barracks home October 1, 2005. Besselman's home was one of many buildings on Jackson Barracks that had been submerged by flood waters as a result of Hurricane Katrina. "The worst part was actually moving through the parishes to get here and seeing the devastation and fearing the worst," said Besselman, commenting on returning to her home. Besselman's husband is 2nd Lt. William Besselman, of the Louisiana Army National Guard's B Company, 3rd Battalion, 156th Infantry Regiment, 256th Brigade Combat Team.

New York National Guard member honored for heroism in her own neighborhood

New York Army National Guard Major General Patrick Murphy, the adjutant general of New York, presents the New York State Medal for Valor, the state's highest military award, to Staff Sgt. Marlana Watson, of Lindenhurst, New York, on Aug. 19, 2015, at the Farmingdale Armed Forces Reserve Center. Watson, a member of the New York Army National Guard's Recruiting and Retention Battalion and a medic, was recognized for rushing across a Syracuse Street on Nov. 5, 2014, to treat two teenagers injured in a drive-by shooting, without regard for her own safety, since the shooter may have still been in the area.

Fire update: National Guard response to Western blazes increases

Oregon Army National Guard Soldiers practice smothering fires during wild land fires training at the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training in Salem, Ore., Aug. 25, 2015. The group is undergoing the training to assist the Oregon Department of Forestry during the 2015 firefighting season. The first group of 125 Soldiers were scheduled to deploy to the fire lines early on Aug. 26, and will be joined by 250 more Oregon citizen-Airmen and citizen-Soldiers who began their training at DPSST today, and are expected to deploy to the fire lines Aug. 30.

Guillermo Arturo Suarez Ferreira, the senior Colombian army engineer, observes engineers with the South Carolina Army National Guard during the Best Engineer Competition at the McCrady Training Center, Eastover, S.C., Aug. 22. Suarez was invited to observe the training exercise as part of the State Partnership Program relationship between Colombia and the South Carolina National Guard. Skarlatos, who along with two childhood friends subdued a heavily armed gunman aboard a Paris-bound train, will be awarded the Soldier’s Medal, the Army's highest award for acts of heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy. On Monday, the trio were awarded the Legion of Honor, France’s highest award, by French President François Hollande.
