National Guard members join "Rebuilding Day" projects

Airmen, Soldiers and civilians with the National Guard repair the home of Michelle Samuel April 26 in LaPlata, Md., during "National Rebuilding Day." The Guard volunteers shingled her roof, repainted the interior and exterior, installed a new stove, washer and dryer, repaired the ceilings and bathroom, installed a new storm door and made many other repairs at no cost.

National Guard Helicopters respond to mid-Hudson wildfires

A New York Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk fills a 600-gallon "Bambi Bucket" from Lake Awosting in Minnewaska State Park, Ulster County, N.Y., April 21, prior to making another dump on a 3,100 acre wildfire. Army National Guard aviation assets responded to a State Emergency Management Office request for assistance on Saturday, April 19, when one Black Hawk helicopter flew 37 water dump missions. On Sunday April 20, and Monday April 21, two Black Hawks responded, flying 14 water missions each day. A New York Army National Guard OH-58 recon helicopter equipped with a thermal imaging device was also used to identify fire hot spots for targeted drops.

National Guard assists local responders in Port Royal anti-terrorism exercise

More than a dozen law enforcement and local-area first responders joined the South Carolina National Guard in a highly realistic maritime anti-terrorism exercise in Port Royal Sound today as part of Vigilant Guard; the largest natural disaster preparedness exercise ever conducted by the South Carolina National Guard.; The exercise scenario consisted of a terrorist organization hijacking a local ferry boat as a platform for deploying a "dirty bomb" in the Port Royal harbor. National Guard helicopters; the Beaufort Police Department and the Beaufort County Sheriff's Department observed the "hijacked" vessel and requested local-area and Guard HAZMAT and Civil Service Team (CST) assistance. Vigilant Guard tested about 100 local-area law enforcement and first responders with responding to a potential maritime terrorist threat. Beaufort County Sherrif's Department SWAT team members approach the 'hijacked' ship.

Hudson, the Guard Bureau's senior enlisted leader, led the four-day conference for Army and Air Guard enlisted leaders in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The Air Guard uses JATO bottles to give aircraft such as C-130 transports extra thrust during difficult takeoff situations.

Two Soldiers from Detachment 1 of the 1221st Engineer Battalion (Route Clearance), a South Carolina National Guard unit from Batesburg, clear debris from a creek that during a training scenario has overflowed the banks in a Beaufort County community during the Vigilant Guard 2008 exercise. Vigilant Guard 2008 gave these soldiers an opportunity to accomplish a real-world mission in a training environment that resulted in a direct improvement for the community.
