Members of the Hawaii Army National Guard Environmental Office and the University of Hawaii pile up miconia plants during a sweep to eradicate the invasive plant on Keaukaha Military Reservation near Hilo, Hawaii. During the sweep approximately 4600 plants were eradicated.

Idaho National Guard moves out to support wildfire suppression efforts

Idaho National Guard members prepare their assigned vehicle prior to heading out from Gowen Field, Idaho, in support of ongoing wildfire suppression efforts to extinguish the Trinity Wildfire. More than 100 Soldiers and Airmen of the Idaho Guard have been called out to support the battle against the Trinity Wildfire and will be performing security, medical evacuation and aerial firefighting roles.

A California Air National Guard C-130J Hercules, equipped with a Modular Airborne Firefighting System, drops retardant on a wildfire near Twin Falls, Idaho, Aug. 8, 2012. The 146th Airlift Wing currently has two C-130Js and about 30 personnel who have been activated since June 30, 2012, to assist the U.S. Forest Service fighting fires in the Northwest and other parts of the country.

Arizona Army National Guard aviators assist with wildfire suppression

Soldiers from Company A, 2nd Battalion, 285th Aviation Regiment use two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters to fill Bambi buckets during wildfire suppression efforts in Tonto National Forest, Ariz., Aug. 14, 2012. The aircrews assisted the state and national forestry divisions with battling the Charley Fire near Bartlett Lake and Mistake Peak Fire near Roosevelt Lake throughout the week.

Colorado Army National Guard Soldiers use a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter to help move an estimated 7,000 to 9,000 marijuana plants -- nearly $15 million street value -- from two remote areas near Rye, Colo., Aug. 15, 2012. Members of the Colorado National Guard Joint Counter-Drug Task Force's Drug Interdiction section were called to assist the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office move the plants, which were growing in steep terrain that's impassible by motor vehicle. The operation is one of the largest marijuana busts in Colorado.

An aircrew from the Wyoming Air National Guard's 153rd Airlift Wing drop fire retardant from a C130-H Hercules aircraft equipped with Modular Airborne Firefighting Systems while assisting with suppression of the Squirrel Creek wildfire about 70 miles east of Cheyenne, Wyo., July 6. In response to increased fire activity in the western United States aircrews from the 153rd Airlift Wing operating MAFFS-equipped C-130s are set to resume operations Tuesday.

Medics from the Alabama Army National Guard's 129th Area Support Medical Company, strap mannequins and role-players to litters and evacuate them from a building at Muscatatuck Urban Training Complex, Ind. "It's always important for medics to practice mass causality incidents because those are usually the most stressful and resource intensive," said Sgt. 1st Class Richard Pike, a platoon sergeant with the 129th ASMC. The Soldiers have been honing their skills while participating in Vibrant Response 13, a major field training exercise conducted by U.S. Northern Command and U.S. Army North.
