Shared Horizons 11 kicked off at the Republic of Georgia National Guard Training Center in Tbilisi. The U.S. Army Europe-led table-top exercise is designed to prepare the RoG government to provide civil response in the event of a natural disaster. Shared Horizons 11 includes about 100 personnel from various RoG ministries and Georgia National Guard members who have worked together under the State Partnership Program for 16 years.

Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines gathered in Patriot Square on Camp Phoenix Kabul, Afghanistan, to swear an oath. On the day of American Independence, 48 service members deployed to Afghanistan in the support of Operation Enduring Freedom were naturalized as United States Citizens. "This group that's here truly represents the values and diversity of America," said Ambassador Karl Eikenberry, U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan. "Each of you are clearly doing your part to ensure America's success," he added. Among the naturalized service members: Bronze Star and Purple Heart recipients.

Paula Rodriguez, a traditional Guard member with the Texas Army National Guard is the deputy sexual assault prevention and response coordinator and brings her volunteer duty and experience with her to southern Iraq. In her hometown of Austin, Texas, she manages the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program and works with the military and local community to provide the care needed for sexual assault and domestic violence victims by assigning advocates to them.
Florida National Guard producing alternative fuels at Camp Blanding

Jessika Blersch, the sustainability coordinator for the Florida National Guard's Camp Blanding Joint Training Center, pumps methanol into a biodiesel processor while processing vegetable oil from the installation's Consolidated Dining Facility into biodiesel. The cleaner-burning biodiesel is used to fuel state maintenance vehicles and saves the Guard money while also reducing the amount of waste that comes out of the installation.
