Widow of fallen Soldier joins Florida Army National Guard

Pvt. Alecia Calloway is one of the newest members of the Florida Army National Guard. On Aug. 27, 2014, Calloway - a widow of an Army Soldier -  took the Oath of Enlistment at the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) in Jacksonville, joining the Florida Army National Guard’s 2153rd Finance Detachment.

A Soldier from Virginia Army National Guard’s 180th Engineer Company uses an excavator to demolish an abandoned structure in Petersburg, Virginia as part of Operation Renew. Operation Renew provides Virginia National Guard engineer assets to assist local authorities in reclaiming control of known drug trafficking areas by destroying abandoned structures known to have ties to the local drug trade. The program operates under the supervision of the Virginia Guard Counterdrug Task Force and in conjunction with local law enforcement.

Northern Strike was a three week exercise led by the National Guard that demonstrated the combined power of joint and multi-national air and ground forces. TACPs with the 169th ASOS and more than 5,000 other Service members from 12 states and two coalition nations participated in the combat training.

Immediate Response 14 is a U.S. Army Europe-sponsored exercise hosted by Slovenia this year. IR14 is designed to prepare participating nations for increased contributions to ongoing and future NATO post ISAF operations, while enhancing regional cooperation, confidence, and security assurance among regional Balkan allies.

Lt. Col. Morris "Moose" Fontenot Jr. was part of the 104th Fighter Wing based in Westfield, Massachusetts. He was killed Aug. 27, 2014, when his F-15C Eagle crashed in mountainous Virginia terrain. He had been flying  from Massachusetts to New Orleans for a scheduled system upgrade when it went down near Deerfield, Virginia.

Virginia Army National Guard aviators assisted with aerial search and rescue efforts with Lakota and Black Hawk helicopters, Soldiers and Airmen from the Fort Pickett-based 34th Civil Support Team provided communications and incident management assistance and additional Guard personnel coordinated the overall aviation operation.
