Wisconsin Army National Guard combat medics quickly assess a battle-damaged mannequin in an urban combat setting during a two-day Army Medical Department (AMEDD) training session at Fort McCoy, Wis., May 19 to 20, 2012. Realistic training events - such as extracting wounded Soldiers from an urban combat zone and from a guard tower, litter obstacles, battalion aid station and loading casualties on air and ground medevac vehicles - reinforced core skills for more than 200 combat medics and other military medical professionals.

Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, awards Army Sgt. 1st Class Ryan Ahern, with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne), the Silver Star at the Pritzker Military Library in Chicago, May 19, 2012. Ahern was awarded the Silver Star for saving the lives of his injured teammates in Afghanistan in 2009. He thanked members of his unit and his family for the sacrifices they made during his deployment. Also pictured is Army Capt. Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski visited Illinois Army National Guard Soldiers and five Polish officers who were conducting training May 20, 2012 at the Marseilles Training Center in Marseilles, Ill. Komorowski was accompanied by Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn and senior leaders of the Illinois National Guard, to include Army Maj. Gen. William L. Enyart, the adjutant general of the Illinois National Guard. Komorowski presented Quinn, Enyart, and 13 other Illinois Guard members with the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland, an honor that is bestowed upon foreigners for distinguished contributions to international cooperation with the nation of Poland.

A loadmaster from the Kentucky Air National Guard’s 123rd Airlift Wing directs an all-terrain vehicle May 14, 2012, as its driver exits the cargo bay of a Kentucky Air Guard C-130 onto the flight line at Fort Campbell, Ky. The 123rd was participating in an exercise to test its response to a simulated earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, a fault line that originates near New Madrid, Mo., and stretches southwest across four states. About 20 Kentucky Airmen, all assigned to the 123rd’s Initial Response Hub package, assessed Campbell Army Airfield for earthquake damage, determined the kinds of airlift operations the facility could support and opened the ramp for incoming relief and aeromedical evacuation flights within five hours of being called to duty. As the sun comes up in Joplin, Mo., on May 23, 2011, the Missouri National Guard's 117th Engineer Team's search and rescue specialists sort through rubble left by a tornado that roared into Jasper County Sunday evening.
