New York National Guard instrumental to Reaper training mission on ground, in air

The MQ-9 unmanned aerial vehicle the "Reaper" can cruise airborne at about 250 miles per hour and between 15,000 and 20,000 feet. It has the ability to fly for up to 15 hours with a full-motion video that can be streamed back to a tactical operations center or command and control center for first-response missions. The aircraft also is capable of acquiring targets and tracking them for long periods of time from high altitudes with its camera system.

Wisconsin Air National Guard Tech. Sgt. Robert Garrelts is the first recipient of the Thomas Wortham IV Achievement Award. The award's namesake was a Wisconsin Army National Guard officer, Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran, and member of the Chicago Police Department who was killed outside his parents' Chicago home when four men attempted to steal his motorcycle. Air Force Maj. Gen. Don Dunbar, the adjutant general of Wisconsin, and Wortham presented the award.
