A Hawaii National Guard soldier from the 298th Infantry, Cpl. David M. Akui, captured the first Japanese prisoner of war by American military forces during World War II on Dec. 8, 1941. While on beach patrol that morning, Akui apprehended Ensign Kazuo Sakamaki, a commander of one of the “midget submarines” intended as part of the invasion. Sakamaki went on to become president of Toyota in Brazil.
