Four Oregon engineers return from Haiti

By Spc. Jessica Zullig 135th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment

PORTLAND, Ore., - The four Oregon Air National Guard members who deployed to Haiti following the devastating earthquake there in January, returned to Oregon today.

The team, which included 2nd Lt. Mark Gibson, Master Sgt. Ken Campbell, Tech. Sgt. Michael Fischer, and Staff. Sgt. Matt Jenkins, arrived via commercial flight to Portland International Airport.

The four-man team is part of the 123rd Weather Flight—a tenant unit of Oregon Air National Guard's 142nd Fighter Wing and part of the Combat Operations Group.

The group joined the military and civilian task force stationed at the Port-au-Prince Airport in Haiti. They provided weather operations support for the 24th Air Expeditionary Group, and took part in post-earthquake relief efforts.

The four airmen worked rotating 12-hour shifts, and assisted civilian and military rescue workers during recovery efforts at the Hotel Montana.

The team left Oregon for Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Feb. 2. While they were originally scheduled to remain there for six months, their tour was cut short due to the transition of recovery efforts to civilian agencies.
