ARLINGTON, Va. -The men and women of the National Guard were front and center as recipients of the National Defense University Foundation’s American Patriot Award during a recent gala here.
Gen. Frank J. Grass, chief of the National Guard Bureau, received the award on behalf of all National Guard Soldiers and Airmen.
“I am extremely honored to represent the nearly 460,000 Guardsmen and women in 50 states, three territories and the District of Columbia,” Grass said. “I accept this award on their behalf. They are truly the best this nation has to offer.”
The American Patriot Award is given to exceptional leaders who dedicate their lives to enhancing human security and global stability, according to the NDUF.
“The men and women of the National Guard are the embodiment of service, versatility, and patriotism, well deserving of joining the outstanding group of Americans who have been honored with the American Patriot Award, our very highest recognition,” said Al Zimmerman, chairman of the NDU foundation board of directors.
“It is especially fitting that the NDU foundation honors Guardsmen,” he added. “More than 250 attend the National Defense University annually, where they polish their skills as leaders in building and maintaining our nation’s security.”
Safeguarding security, noted the CNGB, is just part of the value the National Guard provides America every day.
“The National Guard does three things extraordinarily well: we fight America’s wars, protect the homeland, and build global and domestic partnerships,” Grass observed. “It’s very gratifying when others recognize the work we do for America and with our partners around the globe.”
Previous recipients of the American Patriot Award include Gen. Colin Powell, President George H.W. Bush, Sen. John Glenn, Sen. Daniel Inouye, former Secretary of Defense Dr. Robert Gates and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
