Oregon National Guard Stands up First-Ever Oregon Joint Task Force (Exercise Only)

By Press Release from Oregon National Guard

The Oregon National Guard has stood up Oregon's first-ever Joint Task Force (JTF) during the large multi-state, anti-terrorism training exercise known as TOPOFF 4, Oct. 16-19 at the Portland Air National Guard Base.

"This is quite a significant and historica event for Oregon's military," said Capt. Lucas Ritter, public affairs officer for the JTF.

The JTF is operated by members of the Oregon Army and Air National Guard, members of the U.S. Coast Guard, and is commanded by Brig. Gen. Charles Yriarte, commander of the 82nd Troop Command Brigade.

The purpose of the JTF is to provide civil authorities with any resources they may need within military capabilities. This support could include anything from coordinating troop movements to assist evacuation efforts, medical evacuation support, and providing logistical support, such as transportation and equipment.

"We are providing a strong Joint Task Force that is ready to respond to any mission the Governor may give us," said Lt. Col. Robert Mouw, deputy commander, 82nd Brigade Troop Command.

The JTF is using new tools to include a new mapping program, live video-feed capabilities from helicopters and new satellite communications tools. The exercise provides Oregon's military an opportunity to test and become familiar with the capabilities of this new equipment.

Media interested in obtaining footage and interviews at the JTF may meet with Capt. Lucas Ritter at 2:00 p.m. today at the Contractor Gate, 6801 NE Cornfoot Road Portland, Ore.
