Security Airmen sharpen weapon skills on new simulator

By Senior Airman Audrey Chappell 139th Airlift Wing

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The 139th Security Forces Squadron trained on a new weapons simulator to improve marksmanship skills at Rosecrans Air National Guard Base Nov. 2.

The PRISim Portable Military Trainer allows Airmen to get hands-on training while saving resources. Tech. Sgt. Cody Root, 139th Security Forces Squadron training manager, says this simulator is a more cost-effective way to train.

“All we’re spending is CO2 cartridges, as opposed to going out to a range, put all the safety gear on, go through all the precautions and checks and spending rounds,” Root said. “It’s costing us only pennies to operate this.”

The simulator uses real weapon systems to provide weight and is modified with CO2 cartridges, which mimics recoil for a realistic training experience. The trainer projects different target practice games with customizable scenarios. Root says this system may be used to train Airmen from across the base, not just those in security forces.

“If someone is struggling on the range … we can set [the simulator] up like our range and work on their fundamentals of shooting,” Root said.

The trainer can turn virtually any room into an effective training environment, allowing for consistent training and learning objectives for each Airman. The system also enables units to integrate video footage of their base to simulate scenarios security forces may experience.

Every security forces unit in the Air National Guard will receive the simulator system, said Root.
